A natural corridor between
the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that crosses the Languedoc
to the Aquitaine, this region has been for all time a well travelled passage.
After the Iberians, the Volques Tectosages, the occupation of the Romans, the grand invasions, and the feudal system, came the dramatic impact on the region that today
is known as the crusade of the «catharses».
Trencavel !
Where does the name of this property come from, if not borrowed by this family
which holds as its possession the viscounties of Carcassonne and Beziers
from the 10th to the 13th Century ? Together with alliance and reversals of the feudal powers, where the notion of the father land did not yet exist, the people where moved and controlled according to the interests of their lord.
In the 12th century Raimond Trencavel paid homage to the king of Aragon.
He was murdered in 1167 by the people of Beziers (under the support of the count of Toulouse) outraged by his encounter with the king of Aragon.
The son of Raimond Trencavel revenged with the aide of Alphonse d’Aragon.
As a result, forty years of war followed ending with no winners or losers.
Then Simon de Monfort arrived from the north taking the fief of Trencavel.
The afterglow of the excessive abuse of this crusade still looms the atmosphere
and is deep rooted within the land where the name «Trencavel»
still floats as a «standard bearer» of liberty.
